Orthopedic Physician
An orthopedic physician works on the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of disorders of the musculoskeletal system. This includes the bones, the muscles, the joins and connective tissues such as tendons and ligaments. Orthopedic doctors focus on orthopedic medicine, but they may also work closely with surgeons, particularly those who have chosen to focus on orthopedic surgery. The patients who are seen by orthopedic doctors may sometimes require surgical treatment, and orthopedic physicians may also be required to assist with the treatment and rehabilitation of patients who have undergone surgery or treatment elsewhere.
Orthopedic doctors may focus on a particular type of problem or a specific patient population. They may also work within a particular specialty or sub-specialty of medicine, such as emergency medicine, sports medicine, geriatrics, rheumatology or rehabilitative medicine. Some orthopedic physicians work mainly on patients who have suffered some form of trauma, while others focus on patients who have been affected by diseases or deformities of the musculoskeletal system.
Orthopedic physicians can work in a range of different clinical environments, depending on the type of practice and sub-specialty that they have chosen. Some practices specialize in orthopedics, but doctors practicing orthopedic medicine may also work in larger, less specialized practices or in hospitals.
The types of problems that an orthopedic physician will have to deal with include broken bones, arthritis, osteoporosis, and tumors in the bones. Some physicians will see a wide range of different patients, suffering from a range of different problems, but those who are working in a more specialized environment will usually only have to treat certain types of problems. Physicians who have chosen to specialize in sports medicine will predominantly work with athletes who have suffered sports related injuries, for example.
In some settings, orthopedic medicine will involve the treatment of emergency cases, such as injuries and broken bones. In other cases, the physician will focus more on the long-term care and rehabilitation of patients, or on caring for patients who are suffering from degenerative diseases.
Orthopedic alternative medicine is a varied field that enables physicians to work with a wide range of different patients, conditions and treatments. Physicians can choose to focus on a particular patient population, type of disorder or area of the body, or they may choose to work in a general practice, depending on their personal preferences.
The hours which a doctor is required to work and the relationships, which they can build up with their patients depend largely on the focus of their practice. Orthopedic physicians may choose to work in areas such as rehabilitation, which will often involve building up a long-term relationship with their patients, or in dealing with emergencies and traumas. Physicians who choose to work with injuries may also need to be ready to work longer hours and to be on call, while those focusing on rehabilitation or the care of patients with degenerative diseases may be able to have a more flexible schedule.
The varied nature of orthopedic medicine makes it difficult to generalize, but orthopedic physicians will typically spend a lot of their time with patients, usually in a clinic or surgery. They may be called upon to consult with other doctors and surgeons, and they will also need to spend time completing paperwork. Some orthopedic physicians choose to undertake research.
